More than a phobia,
more than irrational
Project Brief
This work intends to provoke human sensations like disgust, repulse and fear. Feelings that I consider to be “automatic” or “immediate responses” and for that reason were elected.
I am presenting a project about the true origin of reactions:
Are they inherent to the human being? A result/effect of our evolution? Why do we feel disgust for beings with which we share the same environment and nature?
Debating about social influence, the actions and reactions of a group over a subject, I inquire: We have never been told subject X or Y is bad, repulsive, etc.
However, it is through an assimilation process of the reactions of our peers that a similar reaction is created. Can this reaction be shifted? Is this anything other than a cultural matter? What are the repercussions of this reasoning when applied to other human beings instead of animals?
In “It’s not OK” I measure the power of human rationality against our immediate responses. The contradiction between the title of the artwork and the caption intentionally repeated, leads the spectator to that duality.
The reinforcement of “It’s OK” accomplished through the continuous repetition of the sentence suggest an attempt of behavioral shift, self-persuasion and at the same time, the self-contradiction mentioned earlier. This self-contradiction is more than fundamental to the personal growth of the subject and subsequently to the evolution of the group and society.
